In August 1968, it was announced that The Beatles had formed Apple Records, (becoming a division of Apple Corps LTD.), as an effort to release output not only by the band, but solo entities, and in developing artists. The first commercial release on Apple was “Hey Jude” (issued August 26,1968 – with Capitol catalog number #2276). The label would go on to launch new acts, such as Jackie Lomax, Mary Hopkin, The Iveys (renamed Badfinger), as well as efforts from James Taylor, Billy Preston and others.
