The gentleman who we knew with HERMAN’S HERMITS, donning those Buddy Holly styled glasses, guitarist LEK LEKENBY, would have celebrated birthday #78 on May 14 (died in 1994). In 1986, I met Lek, and asked him about the guitar intro of ‘Mrs.Brown.” as Lek explained, “I wanted to get a banjo type sound, so I took some tissue paper, placed it under the bridge area of the guitar…and that was it!”

Also this week, we recall DUCK DUNN, (born May 13) who was one of the most heralded bassists. He came to prominence with BOOKER T.& THE MG’s, (joining the act after the hit “Green Onions”) and became known as a session player for many artists on the Stax / Volt label roster, such as Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, and countless others. Dunn passed on at age 70, in 2012.
