Exactly what we needed for the summer of 1966, was the perfect #1 bubbly song with subtle suggestive lyrics… “..my baby does the Hanky Panky!” We were hooked, line and sinker by a young man from Niles, Michigan who recorded that song three years prior. It was the ear of a Pittsburgh DJ named Bob Mack who gave it a few ‘new’ spins on his turntable, that made Tommy James an overnight success on Roulette Records, evolving into a string of hits with The Shondells, and as a solo artist.
In 2009, I was honored to be a guest at Tommy’s home, attending his 63rd birthday party. I asked Tommy if back in the early days, he ever thought that he’d be a part of rock history. He said, “Eddie, it was all a blur back then, we’d do the Ed Sullivan Show, hop on a plane to do a concert, then be in the recording studio to produce our next hit, it all moved so quick…” And during this millennium, amazingly Tommy has never slowed down, having released a best selling book in 2010 entitled “Me, The Mob & The Music,” and currently hosting a weekly radio show entitled “Gettin’ Together with Tommy James.”
