It was in August 1965, when the Ohio based group THE MC COYS, would release a song that would capture the country by storm debuting on Billboard’s Hot 100 at #99, and finally reaching #1 in October- “HANG ON SLOOPY.” The tune was a spinoff of a song recorded earlier in 1964 by The Vibrations entitled “My Girl Sloopy.” The Mc Coys would continue with a string of hits for the Bang label thru 1967, then on to Mercury with “Jesse Brady.”. Of course, guitarist / vocalist Rick Derringer had a solo career, (major hit with his self-penned) “Rock & Roll Hootchie Coo,” and enjoyed successful periods performing with Johnny & Edgar Winter. In 1997, Rick appeared in Hazleton PA, and graciously signed my copy of the 45, which brought him to stardom.

Now, for a flashback, let’s check out the original version, “My Girl Sloopy” by The Vibrations (1964)
