Hard to believe that this year marks the 52th anniversary of Woodstock, heralded as the forerunner of the term ‘rock festival.’ Held on Max Yasgur’s farm near Bethel N.Y., for three days, August 15-18, 1969, those in attendance (…estimated at over 500,000) were greeted by performances of an astonishing 32 acts, ranging from Richie Havens to Sly & The Family Stone, and Sha Na Na. One of the most legendary artists to appear was Jimi Hendrix, with 30,000 concert goers hearing “The Star Spangled Banner,” wave proudly from his Fender Stratocaster guitar. The event of Woodstock, was chronicled in the subsequent movie / documentary released in 1970, and to commemorate it’s 40th anniversary in 2009, a DVD release featured additional performances not seen in the original film.
